Giving an IM shot to an aggressive patient

One night, this early 20s male came into the ER for belligerence and aggression towards the police. The doctor decided to give him haldol and ativan, so I drew the medication up. We had about 5 people holding him down so I can give him the shot. When I was giving him the shot in the thigh, all of a sudden I realized the patient’s arm reached over and was trying to pull the syringe out of my hand. I tried to hold on to the syringe, but the patient was able to rip it out of my hands. I yelled and everyone let go. The patient was holding the syringe in his hand acting like he was going to throw it at us. Somehow, the doctor snuck behind him and ripped the needle out of his hand. I felt like I was being judged since it was my hand he took the needle out of. I saw the person who let go of his arm, but I never said anything. I cried in my car that night and it was hard for me to show back up at work. Lesson learned.. If you are ever giving a shot to a noncompliant patient..always make sure your coworkers have a good hold on the patient. From then on, I always do a little time-out beforehand to make sure everyone is ready.
